Why these settings
Discord Nitro allows 500 MB per file, Nitro Basic 50 MB (as of August 2026). Compared with the 20 MB free limit there is a lot of headroom, so most files fit without a visible drop in quality.
What does not fit in 500 MB is long or high-resolution material. For those, trimming to the part you actually need beats lowering the resolution — the result looks better for the same size.
Size is roughly bits-per-second times seconds, which means halving the length doubles the bitrate you can spend. When 500 MB is not enough, the length is usually the reason rather than the resolution, and the length is the first thing worth looking at.
When there is headroom, do not spend it. Compression cannot be undone, and quality given up while the file would have fit anyway buys nothing. This tool passes a file through untouched when it is already under the target, so anything below 500 MB is not re-encoded at all.
Common questions
- I am on Nitro Basic (50 MB). Should I use this page?
- This page is fine — it lands on a 500 MB target, but the target is editable, so set it to 50 MB. If you are aiming at the 20 MB free limit, the dedicated page saves you a step by opening at 20 MB already.
- What about boosted servers?
- Boosting raises the limit for that server: 50 MB at level 2, 100 MB at level 3 (as of August 2026). It applies to everyone posting there, whether or not they have Nitro. Your own Nitro 500 MB, by contrast, applies everywhere. Where both are in play, the larger number wins.
- Can a 500 MB video still fail to play for the person receiving it?
- Yes. Whether Discord can play it in-app depends on the encoding, not the size. H.264 in an MP4 plays almost everywhere; H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 do not on some devices. This tool encodes H.264, which puts you on the safe side. On slow connections the other thing that bites is buffering, so trimming before you send is still worth doing.
