- Settings follow the destination
- Instead of quality percentages or bitrates, you pick where the file is going. A 1280 px JPEG for email, 1600 px for a web page, 2048 px for social — resolution and quality are derived from the destination.
- Suggestions match the file
- The file size and pixel count are used to rank the five destinations for that particular file. The strength bar is a relative guide, not an absolute score.
- Warns when compression will not help
- Re-compressing an already heavily compressed file can make it bigger. When that is likely, it is flagged before you start, and the results screen shows the size actually measured.
How to use
Choose an image or a video
Drag and drop a photo, a screenshot or a video, or click to choose one. Its current size and dimensions appear once it has loaded.
Pick where it is going
Choose one of the five destinations: a web page, email or chat, social media, as small as possible, or keep the quality. They are reordered to fit the file you dropped, the top one is already selected, and each shows the size it is expected to come out at.
Compress and save
Press the compress button and the work runs in the browser. When it finishes you see the new size against the original, and the save button hands you the file.
Glossary
- Which matters more, resolution or quality?
- Resolution. Data scales roughly with pixel count, so taking a 4032x3024 photo down to a 1600 px long edge leaves about 16% of the pixels — a 6x cut — before quality is touched at all. Quality (how hard the encoder compresses) is the second adjustment, applied after.
- What is a "longest edge" cap?
- It shrinks whichever side is longer down to that many pixels. The aspect ratio is unchanged, and a file already smaller than the cap is never enlarged. The "keep the quality" goal has no cap at all and does not touch the dimensions.
- Will I get WebP or JPEG?
- WebP by default: at the same apparent quality it is about 30% smaller than JPEG, and it keeps transparency. If the browser cannot write WebP, you get JPEG instead. Only "send by email or chat" starts as JPEG, so the attachment opens reliably whatever the recipient uses.
- What is bitrate?
- How much data one second of video is allowed. Higher keeps more picture and makes a bigger file. Each goal sets a figure for picture and for sound separately — the email goal, for instance, is 900 kbps of video and 96 kbps of audio.
- What happens if I compress an already-compressed photo again?
- The loss stacks. JPEG and WebP cannot be undone, so every open-redraw-rewrite cycle removes more. Rather than passing the same material through repeatedly, work from the original file and do it once.
- How accurate is the estimated size?
- It is a guide. Images are estimated from quality and pixel count; video at 1.6x the requested bitrate. The estimates are set to come out high, so the actual size is usually smaller than shown.
Frequently asked questions
- Are my photos and videos uploaded?
- No. Reading, compressing and saving all finish inside your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere. Material you would not hand to a stranger is safe to use here.
- Which of the five should I pick?
- Pick by destination. "Put it on the web" for a blog or a site, "send by email or chat" for an attachment, "post to social" for a platform. Use "as small as possible" only when size beats everything, and "keep the quality" when the dimensions must not change. The order changes to suit your file, so the top one is a fine answer.
- Why does compressing a video take as long as the video?
- Because it is played through, each frame redrawn at the target size, and re-recorded as it goes. Playing faster does not help — the recording runs against the wall clock. Keep this tab visible while it works; switching away stops it.
- Why do I sometimes get MP4 and sometimes WebM?
- Browsers differ in what they can record. Where MP4 recording is available you get MP4, and otherwise WebM. Which one it will be is shown before compression starts.
- Can it compress audio files?
- No — images and video only. To change an audio format use the file converter; to even out level and finish use the mastering page.
- My transparent background came out white
- JPEG cannot carry transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Choose WebP as the output format to keep it. When a file with transparency is set to JPEG, that is flagged before you start.
