Why these settings
Discord's free upload limit is 20 MB as of August 2026. That number moves: 8 MB → 25 MB → 10 MB → 20 MB over the past two years. Most articles you will find still say 10 MB, so it is easy to compress much further than you needed to.
Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB. Boosted servers also lift it for everyone in that server — 50 MB at level 2, 100 MB at level 3. Your own plan is not the only thing that decides it.
This aims at the target, then **measures what actually came out** and re-encodes if it went over. Video encoders treat a requested bitrate as a suggestion, so arithmetic alone cannot promise a size.
Discord states it is experimenting with upload limits and that some users can send larger files, so 20 MB is a baseline rather than a universal rule. The limit is checked against the file before compression.
Common questions
- It fits in 20 MB and Discord still says the file is too large.
- Three usual causes. Your own account limit rather than the server’s is what you are hitting. The file sits right on the line and Discord counts megabytes as 1,000,000 bytes rather than 1,048,576, so it reads as slightly over. Or you are sending several files at once and the check is against the total. For a borderline file, re-export with a target nearer 18 MB and it goes through.
- How do I keep the quality while fitting 20 MB?
- Cut length before resolution. File size is roughly bitrate times duration, so fitting only the two minutes you need into 20 MB gives you five times the bitrate of fitting all ten. Resolution is next: 1080p down to 720p roughly halves the bitrate needed. Frame rate last — it makes motion look wrong for less saving than you would expect.
- Can I keep just the audio to save space?
- Not from this page; it compresses video and audio together and has no "drop the picture" option. If audio alone will do, use the "pull just the audio out of a video" converter instead. As MP3, even a ten-minute video comes to about 15 MB, which clears the free limit without any compression at all.
