How many semitones should you lower a song by?

A song you love, and your voice gives out at exactly the best part of the chorus. You know lowering the key is the answer. Nobody ever tells you by how much.

On a karaoke machine you hold the flat button and hunt for it. Building your own backing track to practise with is different: you export, listen, guess again, and the afternoon goes.

So: how to decide the number, what lowering costs you, and one thing about ordering that changes the result more than people expect.

Lower is not steadily easier

This is the part worth knowing first. Dropping the key brings the high notes within reach, but the whole song moves down with them, so the low passages descend by exactly the same amount.

A voice runs out at the bottom as well as the top. When the problem is the top, that is all anyone looks at — and then the quiet verse turns breathy and stops carrying. "The chorus works now but the song is harder to sing" is that, happening.

Look for the window where both ends fit. Deciding from the top note alone almost always overshoots.
Your range does not move. The song does — and once the top fits, the bottom starts falling out. The right amount stops just short of that.

Start at −2. Most people land between −2 and −4

One semitone is one press of the flat button. Starting at −2 — a whole tone — is the dependable opening move, and for most people struggling with a high original it is the whole answer.

  1. Export at −2 and sing the whole thing. Check the lowest passage as carefully as the chorus, not just the top note.
  2. Still straining at the top? Drop another semitone. When the low passages start to thin out, you have found the floor.
  3. The window where both ends sit comfortably is your key. It usually falls somewhere between −2 and −4.

What it costs in quality

Honestly: something, always. Changing the key means cutting the recorded waveform into short pieces and reassembling them at different spacing. The further you move, the further the result sits from the original.

In practice: ±1–2 semitones disappears inside a full arrangement. ±3–4 shifts the texture enough to hear if you are listening for it. Past ±5 it plainly sounds processed.

The key and tempo tool here reaches ±6 semitones, which is not an invitation to use all of it. The limit exists because past it the result stops being usable.

The order changes the result

This is the least known part. Transposing with the vocal still in the mix gives the processing away immediately.

The reason is simple: a human voice is the sound we have all heard most. A guitar shifting slightly goes unnoticed; a voice shifting slightly does not. Which suggests the fix — take the voice out first.

Same operations either way. Removing the part where processing is most audible, before processing, is what changes how it lands.

In practice that is two steps: build the backing with the karaoke maker, then take that exported file to the key and tempo tool. One extra pass, and the same number of semitones sounds considerably better for it.

Why a karaoke machine loses nothing

Same goal, entirely different mechanism. A karaoke machine holds its backing as performance data — which instrument plays which note, when. Transposing means playing it again at another pitch, and nothing degrades at all.

What you have here is a finished recording: everything already mixed down to one thing, which you are then asking to move. There is no version of that which is free. With a recording, the cost is unavoidable.

The trade runs the other way too. A backing made from the record keeps the record: the instrumental breaks are the right length and the fills land where you remember them. Sequenced karaoke versions often differ just enough that your entry feels wrong.

While you are there: speed

Tempo moves independently of key. Leave the key at ±0 and move the speed control, and the track gets slower or faster with the pitch exactly where it was.

For practice, slowing down is the useful direction. Around 80% is the line between followable and smeared; below that the beat gets harder to place rather than easier. Speeding up breaks sooner — past about 120% the drum hits start to sound doubled.

In short

Start at −2 and find the window where both ends of the song fit. Then remove the vocal before you transpose. Those two cover most of it.
