Why these settings
It opens at −2 semitones, a whole tone down. Most people who reach for a key control are on the "the original is too high to finish" side, and a whole tone is the first amount worth trying. Move the key slider if that is not yours. The tempo slider is left at 100%, because changing the key is the whole point here — key and speed moving together is what a tape does, and there is a link toggle further down if that is what you want.
Shifting the key always costs quality. The tool cuts the audio into small overlapping pieces and reassembles them, so the further you move, the further the result sits from the original. In practice ±1–2 semitones is hard to notice inside a full arrangement, ±3–4 changes the texture of a voice a little, and past ±5 it plainly sounds processed. The slider reaches ±6, which is not the same as saying you should use all of it.
If you need more than that, finding a different arrangement — or a source you can transpose at the mix — beats pushing this further. What you get here is good enough to practise and demo with.

Common questions
- How many semitones do I need?
- Export at −2 and sing it. If the top of the chorus is still out of reach, go down another semitone at a time. Going too far has its own failure: a voice runs out at the bottom as well as the top, so check that the low passages are still audible rather than only that the high note arrives. Most people land somewhere between −2 and −4.
- Is this the same as the key control on a karaoke machine?
- Same goal, different mechanism. A karaoke machine holds the backing as performance data — which instrument plays which note — so transposing it costs nothing at all in quality. Here the input is a finished recording, and moving its pitch means rebuilding the waveform, which always moves the result away from the original. With a recording, that difference is unavoidable.
- Can I transpose a song with vocals and use it as a backing track?
- Remove the vocal first, then transpose. A voice is the part where processing is most obvious, so shifting the key with it still in place gives away the treatment immediately. Pull the accompaniment out with the stem splitter and bring that here instead — the same number of semitones sounds considerably more settled.
