Why these settings

It opens at −8 cents. A hundred cents is one semitone, so this moves less than a tenth of one. The exact figure for 442 Hz to 440 Hz is −7.85 cents; the cent slider steps in whole numbers, so it opens at −8. Neither the key nor the speed is touched.

Concert bands and orchestras in Japan commonly tune to A=442, and layering a 440 Hz instrument or sample library over that kind of recording leaves the chords correct but the whole thing faintly muddy. A small offset shows up as beating rather than as wrong notes, which is why it usually gets re-recorded several times before anyone works out what is wrong.

The caution here is the opposite of the other three pages. The move is so small that the processing loss is essentially inaudible — which also means **getting the direction wrong is hard to hear**. Decide whether you are moving to 440 or to 442 before you convert. If you do not know what the source was tuned to, measure it with the key, BPM and tuning analyser first and come back.

This page reaches ±50 cents, half a semitone. Anything beyond that is not a difference in reference pitch — it is tape speed or a machine running fast — and belongs on the key slider instead.

What about going the other way, A=440 up to A=442?
+8 cents — same amount, opposite sign. Which direction you want depends on what you are joining. Moving your file into a wind band’s recording means going to 442; sitting it alongside commercial recordings or a sample library means going to 440. When in doubt, move toward whatever cannot be moved — the live players.
My source is 441 Hz, or 443 Hz. What then?
Same formula: 1200 × log2(target ÷ current). 441 → 440 is about −4 cents, 443 → 440 about −12. A useful rule of thumb is roughly 4 cents per hertz of reference pitch. The cent slider steps in whole numbers, so round.
How do I tell whether it is out at all?
Play the reference and your material together and listen for beating — a slow "wah, wah" pulsing. The rate of the beating tracks the size of the offset, and when they match it disappears. For a number rather than an ear judgement, The key, BPM and tuning analyser measures the reference pitch; check there and come back.
