Local AI model setup: The first run downloads a portrait-matting model and runtime from the disclosed hosts. It runs ONNX Runtime Web 1.25.1 in a Worker, tries WebGPU where supported, and falls back to WASM. The selected image is not sent to StemStudio. First run downloads about 25 MB of model data and 22 MB of runtime data. See the model source, licence, and dataset conditions

Transparent PNG

The photo is ready for local AI matting.

If the AI model cannot start, images with a suitable solid background can use colour-based background removal instead. It is a different tool, not an equivalent AI result.

Limits and good uses

Does it handle every subject?

No. This is a portrait-only matting model. Products, animals, multiple people, and reflective or complex backgrounds can be poor fits.

Is the AI result guaranteed?

No. Hair, glass, white clothing, effects, and motion can produce imperfect edges or opacity.

Is the image uploaded?

The image is processed in this browser. Only the first-run model and runtime download contacts external hosts.

What happens on the first run?

The pinned AI model and runtime are downloaded. Later runs may use the browser HTTP cache, which the browser can evict.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as colour-based background removal?

No. This estimates a portrait with AI. Use the existing /image/bg-remove tool for a reliable solid-colour background.

Why can the processing image be smaller?

The browser canvas limit can require a smaller working image. The output dimensions are shown on the page.

Can I cancel it?

Yes. Model download, inference, and PNG compositing can be cancelled; a stale run cannot overwrite a newer result.
