Device to device, with no server in between

Both devices need this page open at the same time. Files travel straight from one device to the other, never through a server.

Send a file from your phone to your laptop, or the other way round, over the Wi-Fi you are both on. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no service-side size cap and no expiry. If the receiving device is on Chrome or Edge there is no size limit at all; receiving in Firefox, Safari or on an iPhone caps at 256 MB.

One transfer, not two
What the sender sends arrives at the receiver as it goes. There is no step where the file is put somewhere and then fetched again.
No app, no account
AirDrop is Apple-to-Apple and Quick Share is mostly Android. This works in a browser, so it also works between Windows and iPhone.

How to use it

  1. Open this page on both devices

    On the same Wi-Fi the other device turns up under "Send to" within a few seconds. If it does not, point its camera at the QR code shown here, or use "Nothing showing up?" to connect with a six-digit number.

  2. Put the files on the device card

    Press the card to open a file picker, or drag files onto it. As soon as they are chosen, the other device is asked whether to accept them.

  3. Wait for them to accept

    Once they press Receive, the files travel straight from one device to the other. Progress and speed are shown, "Stop" ends it at any point, and the receiving side is told where they were saved.

Before you use it

Both devices need this page open at the same time
Because no server stores the file, the sender must still be connected at the moment the receiver takes it. It is not suited to "send now, download later".
Closing the sending tab stops the transfer
The thing serving the file is the sending device itself. Closing the tab, sleeping the machine or dropping off Wi-Fi all end the transfer. Leave it open while a large file is moving.
Speed comes from the local network, not your internet plan
The transfer stays on the local network, so your internet upload speed does not matter. Over Ethernet or recent Wi-Fi this is much faster than a round trip through a server.
Receiving outside Chrome and Edge caps at 256 MB
Firefox, Safari and iPhone cannot let you pick a destination folder, so the file has to be held in memory. Receive on Chrome or Edge and there is no ceiling. Sending is unrestricted on every browser, and you are told before the transfer starts if a file is over the limit.

FAQ

Do my files touch your server?
No. This site’s server handles only the few kilobytes needed to find the other device and open a connection. The file itself never passes through it, and the connection is encrypted by WebRTC as a matter of specification.
Is there a size limit?
No service-side limit, because no server holds the file. The receiving browser sets one: 256 MB on Firefox, Safari and iPhone, none on Chrome and Edge. The page tells you before the transfer starts if it applies.
Can I send to someone on a different Wi-Fi?
You can try it with a six-digit code, but it is not guaranteed. Two home connections usually manage it; corporate networks, VPNs and some mobile carriers block direct device-to-device traffic. There is no relay server, so in those environments the connection fails.
We are on the same Wi-Fi but nothing appears
Many office and school networks forbid devices from talking to each other (client isolation), and a VPN hides you from the local network as well. Use the six-digit code instead.
Can strangers on the same network see me?
Yes. On a café or campus network, other people connecting through the same exit can appear in the list. No file moves unless the receiver accepts it, but the device name is visible. That name is randomly generated each time and contains nothing personal.
