Before you upload to a merge site

The file never leaves your machine

The PDFs people need to merge are contracts, invoices, medical records and job applications. The usual free sites do the work on a server, which means uploading all of that first. Here the merge happens in the page, so there is nothing to upload.

Pick pages while you merge

How it works

How do I write a page range?Comma-separated single pages and ranges: "1-3,7,10-12". Leave the box empty to take the whole file. A descending range like "10-8" inserts that stretch backwards, and repeating a number ("1,1,5") inserts that page twice.
What decides the page order?Files are joined top to bottom, and within each file the pages appear in the order you listed them. Reorder files with the up and down buttons on each row — buttons rather than dragging, so the same thing works with a touchscreen, a keyboard or a screen reader.
Why is the output not the sum of the input sizes?It is usually smaller: fonts and images that appeared in several of the source files are stored once in the result. Occasionally it is larger, because the object structure is rebuilt as the pages are copied and some of the original compression does not carry over. Neither changes what is on the page.
What does not survive the merge?Bookmarks (the document outline) are lost. Annotations, links and filled-in form fields may or may not carry over. Digital signatures are always invalidated, because the result is a different document. The page content itself is copied unchanged.

Questions

Can it merge password-protected PDFs?

Not if a password is required to open the file — that row will say so, and the rest of the batch still merges. PDFs that only restrict printing or copying, and open without a password, normally merge without trouble.

Is there a size or file-count limit?

None imposed. But the work happens in your device's memory, so a warning appears past 100 MB in total. Several hundred megabytes at once can crash the tab; merge in two passes if you hit that.

Are my original files modified?

No. They are read and nothing else. The merged document is saved as a new file.

How can I verify nothing is uploaded?

Open your browser's network tab and run a merge — no requests appear. Or load the files, switch the machine offline, and merge anyway; it finishes normally.

Where does the merged PDF end up?

In your downloads folder, and nowhere else. Closing the tab clears both the loaded files and the result from memory. Nothing reaches us.
